New Kid on the Block

I remember when I was in elementary school and word got out that there was a new student, it was like crazy big news. Everyone was excited to see who this “new kid” might be. The more and more I think about it, everyone I knew got excited when a they heard there was a new kid at school even when I was in high school. I think we all just fell in love with the mystery of who that person might be. It seemed that once a week or so went by and everyone met the new kid, the anomaly wore off, and they were just a normal student like all of us. If you were a new student, you had all the pressure in the world to give off a strong first impression.

As Faith said, I will be I guess you can say “contributing” to this great blog every now and then. Faith and I met back two summers ago in Chicago. I was working for YouthWorks! mission trips, and she came to our site for a mission trip with her church. It's crazy to think that months after we met, we reconnected and have been friends since. It's amazing, I met over 500 students that summer, and some how we are still friends now and share our faith stories (God made sure of it!). I personally never get tired of hearing her stories from Nicaragua, they're like super awesome. So about me, first off I'm not usually one to talk about myself so I'll keep my introduction brief. My name's Andrew (obviously), I'm 21 years old and a junior at Western Michigan University. I'm in the School of Social Work here with a minor in Alcohol and Drug Addiction Studies. I love football, basketball, music, you know the usual. I love to write too but I've gotten away from it recently (being a college student can be so freaking busy I'm telling ya). So when Faith said that I should start contributing to her great blog, it was like a perfect opportunity. I now have motivation to start writing again; at least creative writing.

In a way, I'm kind of like the new kid in town at least to this blog. I somehow tried to describe myself in a few sentences so you guys would be familiar with who I am, and want to keep reading. Are first impressions over rated? I can tend to see both sides of an argument to that one. I know I catch myself putting so much stock into first impressions and then later I realize that person is nothing like I thought they were. Anyone ever have that? What I'm getting at is that if you were the new kid at the school, how would you want everyone to see you? Would you change anything about your current self, and why? I often times think to myself and ask would I like me if I met me. I know its crazy, but it's a great way to examine yourself and see if there are some things you really need to work on (I know I've got plenty to improve on). Also, would people know right away that you were a Christian, or is it something you'd hide for a little bit? You only get one first impression, and while they may be a little over-rated there is no doubt people put stock in them. So when you give off your first impression are you 100% you?

I look forward to being a part of this blog, and I'd like to thank Faith for letting this new kid sit at the cool table at lunch.

Lame & Welcome

I'm lame, I know. I haven't posted in forever. Luckily, I have good news! First, I have some ideas for new posts that will be up by Wednesday of next week. Second, I have added an Admin, Andrew, to the blog! Andrew is a friend of mine that I met during a mission trip 2 years ago and we have been sharing about our faith ever since. I've heard his devotionals...they are great! So, he will be posting on here too!! That way, when I'm lame and don't post, he will :)
Anyway, I can't wait to see what good stuff he comes up with!

You're a Christian?

How do you know somebody is a Christian? Well, you normally don't unless you ask. Well, the Bible says you should know someone is a Christian by their actions. Do people know you're a Christian? Do your actions show that you're a Christian? Another bit of slam poetry on the topic. Just can't help myself. Check it out!

Start Something that Matters

For a while now my life has been revolved around missions. I tried to find my niche. I found it through international missions. I have all these role models I've met that live internationally and have foundations that change lives. I've always wanted to do something big...something that changes lives...something that mattered. This is the best slam poetry I've ever found about doing something that matters. Check it out!

Christmas Makes Me Cry

Christmas Makes Me Cry
By Mandisa

I think of loved ones who’ve passed away
And I pray they’re resting in a better place
I think of memories of years gone by
And sometimes Christmas makes me cry

I think of soldiers across the sea
Sometimes I wonder why it’s them instead of me
But for my freedom they give their lives
And sometimes Christmas makes me cry

Tears of faithfulness, tears of hope
I cry tears of joy at Christmas because I know
There is peace on earth for every heart to find
And sometimes Christmas makes me cry

I think of family, I think of home
And say a prayer for those who spend this time alone
‘Cause love can reach out into a silent night
And that’s why Christmas makes me cry

Tears of faithfulness, tears of hope
I cry tears of joy at Christmas because I know
There is peace on earth for every heart to find
And sometimes Christmas makes me cry

I think of Mary and the virgin birth
And I’m amazed by how much God thinks we are worth
That He would send His only Son to die
And sometimes Christmas makes me cry

Tears of faithfulness and tears of hope
I cry tears of joy at Christmas because I know
There is peace on earth for every heart to find
And sometimes Christmas makes me
Oh, sometimes Christmas makes me
Christmas makes me cry

I love this song. For me, Christmas is such an emotional time. I think of Misael, who gets very little for Christmas. I think of all the people in need. I've been blessed to be in charge of the Walmart tree this year, giving gifts to those that are less fortunate. I also pity myself, and wish that Christmas at my house could be like it used to be. Yet, somehow, Christmas makes me so happy. This time of year is so important for Christians. Not only because we are celebrating the birth of our Savior, but because we are even more of a witness to others this time of year. Look at the lyrics...think about the lyrics. What part speaks to you? What part makes you sad? Makes you happy? Let this song speak to you. Pray for those that spend this time alone. Do a good deed. Make someone smile. Open up. Pray. Be thankful for all you have. Smile often. Be a witness.

Thanksgiving

One of the most difficult things about going to Nicaragua wasn't actually going to Nicaragua..it was coming home. Coming home and seeing all that I have and all that I take for granted. Let me tell ya, taking away simple pleasures like a toilet changes a person! ;) But seriously, I remember the first time I went into a fast food restaurant back in the states...I broke into tears. Why? Because people in Nica don't have food at all...I can walk in, pick what I want off a menu of 100+ items, and have it within 5 minutes. In Nica, I saw kids digging through the trash for scraps...I saw them eating my leftovers. I was hurting. Walking into my 4-bedroom 2-bath house that me and my mother only live in hurt. It took me so much to be able to be thankful for what I had and not mad. When I came home (July) I had to wear jackets in the house because I wasn't used to air conditioning! Haha. That's another thing...I promised myself I would never say, "I'm hot" again. They don't have air. I do. So, I challenge you this Thanksgiving to go above and beyond. Don't just say "I'm thankful for family". Duh, we all are. But think about the little things that we take for granted. Like air conditioning, a toilet, toilet paper, food, etc. The people of Nica are the most thankful people I've ever met...and they don't have much to be thankful for!
Today, I am thankful for all the beautiful people I met in Nica that forever changed my life. They make me a better person every day. They have shown me my calling. I am especially thankful for Misael. Honestly, I hardly go a day without thinking about him. He's like my own kid...he makes everyday worth living because I know someday (hoping for this summer) we will be reunited again. Every morning when I wake up, his smiling face is the first thing I see. (His pic is my lock screen on my phone) I am so thankful for the things and people God has put in my life. What are you thankful for today?
